Citizen's Police Academy

The Jacksonville Police Department is proud to offer the Citizen's Police Academy to members of our community.  The goal of the Citizen's Police Academy is not only to help local residents better understand police work, but also to develop stronger ties between the community and the Jacksonville Police Department to better address crime issues.  It is through community cooperation and planning that we can best ensure quality police services in an organized and effective crime prevention program.

The Citizen's Police Academy is an eleven-week program offered in the spring, with classes being held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at the Municipal Building, 200 West Douglas Avenue.  Each evening of instruction will cover different aspects of the law enforcement profession.

Jacksonville Police Department personnel will present the instruction during the Academy with an occasional outside speaker.  Some of the relevant topics that will be covered are:  Criminal Code, Vehicle Code, Gangs, DUI Enforcement, Firearms, Domestic Battery, and Use of Force.  There will be hands-on training as well as simulated practical situations for the students to get a first-hand experience of law enforcement.

There will be a graduation dinner after completion of the eleven-week program and certificates issued to those who have met all requirements.  Students must attend no less than nine classes to successfully complete the program.

There is no charge for participation.  Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, reside or work within Morgan County, possess a valid drivers license, have no felony convictions within the past 10 years, and willing to sign a release for a criminal and traffic records check.
