Citizen's Police Academy History

The First Citizen's Police Academy in Jacksonville was held in 1999. The program was so successful that there were 2 classes offered each year from 2000-2004. In 2005, the program went back to offering one class per year, and has continued to offer one class per year since. As of 2017, there have been almost 500 people successfully complete the course.

The first Citizen's Police Academy presented at the Jacksonville Police Department was headed by Lt. Timothy Shea and former Lieutenant, present Captain Brian Coultas and included the following members:  Carol Carl, Dan Carl, Chuck Nash, Linda Fernandes, Margaret Allen, Wallace Jeffers, Susan Brosmith, Steve Tavender, James Duncan, Ronald Gilbert, Fred Clinton, Edward Glad, Rick Stewart, Kathy Fellhauer, Mark Quinlan, Bob Northrup, Wallace Harrington, Ken Douglas, Larry Evans and Mary Henry.

After graduation from the Jacksonville Police Department's Citizen's Police Academy, members have the option to enroll in the Alumni.  Alumni members continue to work closely with members of the Jacksonville Police Department and assist with upcoming classes, fundraisers, and special events such Cruise Night, Morgan County Fair, and the Fourth of July Celebration at Nichols Park.
